Free Write

Learning to write English composition, the author sat in a college classroom as a student-author.  The college professor, a short skinny well dressed man, instructed the class to free-write for five minutes.

Obstinately, the student-author did not write as his classmates began scribing in their journals.  

The professor began to make his way around the semi-circle arrangement of seating in the classroom.  When the professor arrived at the student-author not writing during free-write he asked, “Why are you not writing?”

“I can’t think of anything to write,” the student-author retorted.

“Write,” responded the professor.

“So, like, anything?”

“Write.”

“Like, cuss words?”

“Write.”

“Like, fuck and shit and bitch?”

“[Right].”

Satisfied with the freedom to misbehave a little in class, the student-author began to write freely the cuss words and the professor continued to finish the circuit of students.

Eventually the student-author became bored of writing cuss words.  Soon other, more intelligent words appeared on the page.  Just as a thought entered to write, the professor declared the free-writing time complete.
